STUDY ABROAD

WAAPAIn July of 2010 UNC’s School of Theatre Arts and Dance commenced a student/faculty foreign exchange program with the Western Australia Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) at Edith Cowan University (ECU). Two UNC theatre majors initiated the exchange and are attending WAAPA for one semester, through November 2010.

One of the leading performing arts programs in Australia, WAAPA is located in Perth, Western Australia, a beautiful city of three million with a climate much like southern California. Its theatre majors pursue professional training in numerous areas of theatre, including Acting, Music Theatre, Directing, Dance, Arts Management, Production, Design and Theatre Studies, and its graduates include actors Hugh Jackman and Frances O’Connor.

Amanda in AustraliaTo be considered for the program students should contact Joe Tort, Director of UNC’s Study Abroad Program, at joseph.tort@unco.edu. Students will be required to:
- complete an application to ECU/WAAPA;
- turn in a letter of reference from a UNC faculty member; and
- write and turn in an essay addressing why he or she wants to attend ECU/WAAPA.

Applications are due in early October for the ECU/WAAPA semester starting the following February, and in early March for the semester starting the following July.

Students chosen for the program will attend WAAPA for one semester, and tuition will be paid to UNC at the same rate as if attending UNC. Many theatre courses taken at WAAPA will be reciprocal for UNC theatre courses. However, to insure reciprocity students must clear each course with their UNC professors.

Eric in AustraliaStudents wishing additional information about the WAAPA program and Perth may contact Ken Womble, Assistant Professor of Theatre, at ken.womble@unco.edu. Ken visited WAAPA in fall 2009 to set up the program. They may also visit WAAPA’s website at http://www.waapa.ecu.edu.au.
