Prior to joining the College of Performing and Visual Arts at UNC, Nelson was executive director of the Community Center for the Creative Arts and taught drawing at Aims Community College. Nelson is one of the original members of the Madison and Main Artists Coop Gallery, where she continues to exhibit. Her creative work includes photography, drawing, collage and hand-made paper. Nelson says, “I consider myself very fortunate to have spent my professional career designing and facilitating opportunities for individuals to engage in creative self-expression. From the Arts Center pre-school, to drawing classes for retirees, to connecting individuals with UNC arts, I’ve been engaged as a teacher, manager, promoter and cheerleader for community access, learning and participation across the arts disciplines.”
