Professor Gómez currently is Associate Professor of Choral Activities and Director of Choral Music education at the University of Northern Colorado and has served as Interim Director of Orchestras at UNC.

Julián Gómez Giraldo has taught choral conducting for many years in his country, and served as choral and orchestral clinician internationally, and through many states in Colombia. Professor Gómez directed the National Symphony Choir in Colombia for ten years. With this choir, he was awarded First Prize in the VI International Polyphonic Competition “Ciudad de Ibagué,” while also receiving the Medal of “Honor al Mérito” in the category of Excellence and Outstanding Merit from the Colombian Institute of Culture.

He worked on several occasions in Europe and in the United States with Helmuth Rilling, and specialized in Gregorian Chant with Benedictine monks Luigi Agustoni, Johannes Berchmans and Juan Ramón Uribe.

Julián Gómez Giraldo was born in Colombia and began his studies at the National Conservatory, the Escuela Superior de Música in Tunja, with renowned conductors Jaime Guillén, María Teresa Guillén and Jorge Zorro Sánchez and earned his Bachelor’s in Music Education and Choral Conducting from the Universidad Pedagógica Nacional, in Bogotá.

He also earned Masters Degrees from Texas Christian University in Choral and Orchestral Conducting, and in Theory and Composition. He is currently working on his Doctoral Dissertation towards a D.M.A in Orchestral Conducting from the University of Northern Colorado, under the guidance of Dr. Russell Guyver.

He has extensive experience playing the French horn, and has composed instrumental and choral works, which include commissions by different Choral Festivals in Colombia and the Colorado Children’s Chorale. Currently Hal Leonard Corporation publishes his choral works.
