You are invited to join People at Work, a series of UNC campus and community-wide events and programs focused on a single theme. These activities provide participants an opportunity to experience and explore the philosophies and practices in the vast diversity that defines the wealth of “work” traditions that exists in our community and beyond.

The University Libraries will be showing documentary films from the UL collections that have to do with work.  The films will be presented on the fourth Thursdays of each month of the Spring and Fall semesters from 7 – 9 p.m.  Films slated for Spring are:
 
Jan 27: 9500 Liberty
– on immigration policy and its effect at the local level
 
Feb 24: F*CK
– “. . . takes a look on all sides of the infamous F-word,” including in the workplace and as uttered by significant political or corporate individuals.
 
Mar 24:  Made in LA = Hecho en
Los Angeles

– “transformation of three Latina garment workers on the fault lines of global economic change who decide they must resist. Through a groundbreaking law suit and consumer boycott, they fight to establish an important legal and moral precedent holding an American retailer liable for the labor conditions under which its products are manufactured.”
 
Apr 28: Shouting Fire: stories from the edge of free speech
– “First Amendment attorney Martin Garbus is interviewed at length by his daughter Liz Garbus on the history and current state of free speech.”  Case studies include a Colorado professor who lost his job after writing an inflammatory article, and protestors at a political rally.

Women’s Conference: “Women at Work Making Change,” the conference will explore women’s issues, leadership, empowerment and the significance of women’s issues on a global scale in breakout sessions and a presentation of “Portraits of Courage: American Women Having It All,” a performance by two female actors that incorporates video segments. Similar to ‘Take Your Child to Work Day”, we are inviting the staff & faculty of UNC to bring the children in their lives (ages 7-18) to participate in career planning workshops, tours, and on-campus experiences that will broaden their knowledge of higher education and their future careers.

Age specific workshop sessions will be available for children to attend. We will also have a discounted rate for lunch ($5 )at the dining halls for those interested in eating with the children on campus.

Chautauqua recreates the traveling tent shows that brought education and entertainment to communities in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Reflecting this year’s theme “Visionaries,” Chautauqua features portrayals of gifted individuals whose impact is still felt today. This year’s line-up will include Henry Adams, Marie Curie, Charles Darwin, Emily Dickinson, W.E.B. Du Bois, Margaret Fuller, C.S. Lewis, Abraham Lincoln, and Walt Whitman
