THE UNC SAXOPHONE STUDIO

A note from Dr. Andrew Dahlke, Assistant Professor of Saxophone

Thank you for your interest in the University of Northern Colorado Saxophone Studio and School of Music. For saxophonists, UNC offers bachelors and masters degrees in the fields of performance, education, and jazz studies. We also offer a bachelor of arts degree in music and a doctorate in performance/pedagogy. Saxophone students have the opportunity to study both classical concert saxophone and jazz saxophone and improvisation in the applied lesson, regardless of major. The student’s focus in the applied lesson is shaped according to their interest, the recommendation of the instructor, and the degree program.

There are a great deal of performance opportunities in both classical and jazz music for saxophonists at UNC, including participation in award-winning ensembles such as one of the five jazz bands, jazz combos, wind ensemble, symphonic band, concert band, marching band, and orchestra. All saxophonists are also encouraged to play in a saxophone quartet. In terms of admittance, the UNC saxophone studio is competitive. Saxophonists at UNC are expected to strive for a high level of artistry and diversity as performing artists and pedagogues. The UNC School of Music provides a caring and challenging environment for students, who receive individual attention from dedicated faculty.
