Graduate Study in Music at UNC
Work with a student-involved, approachable faculty The UNC School of Music has a strong tradition of significant graduate work conducted by students from around the nation and the world. Its reputation is based on generations of thoroughly educated, creative, and energetic graduates. The School maintains rigorous standards of excellence in all aspects of performance, analysis, and research.

Graduate studies at the UNC School of Music are designed to assist the student who holds a bachelor's degree or equivalent in developing advanced professional competencies in his or her chosen area of music. Central to this goal is the presence of faculty members who specialize and are recognized authorities in every aspect of music performance, conducting, history, theory, and composition. Each member of our graduate faculty has earned his or her acceptance by the School of Music and the UNC Graduate School through significant achievement in research, performance, and pedagogy.

One indication of the quality and rigor of our program is the extraordinarily high placement rate for UNC School of Music graduates. A recent North Central Accreditation Report indicated that 95 percent of all UNC School of Music graduates found placement in their preferred field, with Masters of Music/Education Emphasis and Doctor of Arts graduate placement at 98 percent.

The UNC School of Music has been designated as a Colorado Program of Excellence--the highest honor the Colorado Commission on Higher Education can bestow on a program offered by a state-funded institution of higher education. The State designation followed recognition by the UNC Board of Trustees of the School of Music as a Center of Excellence at UNC. Nationally, the UNC School of Music repeatedly appears in the top five music graduate programs in the annual U.S. News and World Report ratings.

Utilize state-of-the-art technology and library resources
Access to the Music Technology Center and the Skinner Music Library allows for exciting avenues of exploration for graduate scholarship. These facilities provide you with the latest in music teaching, research, composition, and recording. At your fingertips are computer-assisted instruction in theory and composition, digitized music library information, computer synthesis work stations, and interactive audio/video facilities.

Benefit from numerous performance opportunities In addition to a rewarding program of study, UNC offers abundant opportunities for you to demonstrate your artistic ability. You will join some 40 faculty and 450 music majors who present more than 250 cultural events each year. The UNC School of Music boasts more than 50 performing ensembles, a number of which are nationally recognized. UNC music students and ensembles are finalists and winners in state, regional, national, and international collegiate and professional competitions. In addition to on-campus performance facilities, many UNC events are held in the Union Colony Civic Center, our fine local performing arts center.

Master of Music
The Master of Music degree is designed to help you develop advanced professional competencies leading to a professional performing career, doctoral studies, and/or college teaching.

You may earn the Master of Music degree with an emphasis in eight different areas: •choral conducting •education •instrumental performance •jazz •music history and literature •composition •vocal performance •wind/orchestra conducting.

The Master of Music/Education degree program's structure allows for extensive flexibility in designing an in-depth program based on individual career interests and professional orientation.

Doctor of Arts.
The Doctor of Arts degree offers you the highest level of preparation as a musical scholar-performer-teacher. Options are provided for primary and/or secondary emphases in conducting (choral, orchestral, winds), jazz pedagogy, music education, music history and literature, composition, opera theatre, performance, and performance/pedagogy. You may also choose a secondary emphasis from a variety of specialties both within and outside the School of Music.

Fellowships and Scholarships
Your audition to the UNC School of Music qualifies you for consideration for a wide variety of talent awards and graduate assistantships. Such awards are competitive in nature and require your admission into a graduate music degree program for eligibility.

The Office of Student Financial Resources
administers grants, loans, employment, scholarships, and veterans benefits. To be considered on a priority basis for need-based financial aid through that office, you must submit a completed federally approved Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form by the preferred filing date of March 1.

If you apply after March 1, you will be considered on a funds-available basis. You should also apply by March 1 for UNC scholarships by completing a UNC Scholarship Application Form, available at Student Financial Resources, Carter Hall 1005, 970-351-2502.

Housing. UNC offers student family housing and some apartments. For information on space, costs, and services, you may contact Residence Life, 970-351-2721. Off-campus housing ranges from small apartments to rental houses. You will find rental costs to be reasonable for a university environment, and homes for sale are available in all price ranges.
