Hands-On Arts

Enjoy the pleasure and excitement of new knowledge and personal creation. Have some fun with activities offered through the College of Performing and Visual Arts Office of Community Arts. There are opportunities for all ages and interests.

Register by phone 970.351.2200. Pre-registration is required for all activities. REGISTRATION DEADLINE IS TWO DAYS BEFORE EVENT IS SCHEDULED unless otherwise noted.

COMMUNITY DRUM CIRCLE
Every Tuesday 7 – 8 pm

All are welcome in these friendly, energizing community events. It won’t be long before your foot is tapping and you’re reaching for one of the large variety of available drums and rhythm instruments. You’ll be up and drumming in no time. No experience is necessary - 3 years old or 90, you can join in!

CARNIVAL MASKS
Saturday, February 6, 1 to 4pm

Masquerade balls and streets full of masked revelers are long-standing Carnival traditions. Celebrate the Carnival season (which ends on Fat Tuesday, Feb 16) by creating your own elaborate, colorful masks and faces.
Ages: 8- adult

JUST SAY YES! - IMPROV COMEDY
Saturday, February 20, 10am to 3pm

Luke is really funny, and you can be, too. He will lead simple improv exercises in a group setting. So relax, unleash your inner comic, and have a great time playing along. Lunch break (on your own).

GOURD BIRD HOUSES

Objects from nature were the very first arts supplies. Make bird houses that are functional as well as decorative. Your feathered friends will love to call them home.

DISCOVER YUPO PAPER
Saturday, March 6, 12:30 to 3:30pm

You can expect surprises with yupo! Yupo synthetic paper is a compelling and unique alternative to traditional art papers. Watercolorists have found Yupo to be receptive to a variety of aqueous techniques, but it is also ideal for drawing, acrylic painting and more. Come try it out!

THE BOX PROJECT
Saturday, March 6, 10am to noon

Make and send a box of Peace, or Love or Freedom. In May of 2006, painter Franck de las Mercedes began sending “Priority Boxes” to anyone anywhere in the world who asked for one, for free. “The Priority Boxes” project is a public art series that seeks to provoke thought, to make people reconsider their ability to influence change, communicate through art and make art accessible to people from all walks of life. Why not join in?

PUBLIC ART IN PROCESS
Tour of Darrell Anderson’s Public Art Commission in downtown Denver
Saturday, March 6, 10am to 2pm
Join public artist Anderson (known for his work at DIA) on a tour of his current project. He will share information on the concepts, planning and execution of creating a permanent public art installation.
Ages: 8 - Adult

ROOTS OF SALSA
Saturday, April 3, 9am to 4pm

Explore the various styles of Afro-Cuban music that have contributed to current day Salsa, from early folkloric styles of music, through Mambo, Cha cha cha, Boogaloo and Shing-a-ling to newer styles like Songo and Timba. Class included audio, video and live demonstrations.
Ages: young adult/adults
