Title: Leadership Institute for Education In and Through the Arts

Course Description: The institute will examine the role of the arts in exemplary educational practice. Participants are chosen because of their experience in education, personal interest in the arts and affiliation with arts supportive schools and must have completed the Level 1 course. Purposes, concepts, and critical issues in the disciplines of theatre, music, visual arts and mixed discipline art forms will be discussed. Specific strategies for implementing the objectives defined in Level 1 will be formulated and applied to k-12 education. During the institute, the participants will develop curricular strategies that address the goals of their individual schools.
Required Text: Curriculum and advocacy resources will be provided.
Course Goals and Objectives:
- Participants will reflect on the role of artmaking in their own lives and the lives of their students. They will examine the place metaphor as a conceptual framework for curriculum development
- Participants will develop curricular strategies to implement the arts programs discussed in the 5 year planning.
- Participants will utilize strategic K-16 partnerships to provide quality education in and through the arts
- Participating art educators will create lines of communication and partnership programs with state and local arts agencies that will enhance arts experiences for K-12 students
- The strategic K-16 and arts agency partnerships, the implementation of five year arts plans and systems of accountability, and the participation in longitudinal research activities will give the participants a strong role in arts advocacy and ability to inform public arts policy.
Course Outcome:
Each participating school team will develop a five-year arts plan, individually suited for the school they represent. The plan will acknowledge needs specific to each art discipline and the needs of the school and school community. The plan will provide a framework for longitudinal research conducted by the University of Northern Colorado and the Center for Integrated Arts Education.
The plan will include:
- Beliefs, Goals and Mission Statements
- Specific Objectives for program or curriculum development
- Assessments
- Timeframes for completion of objectives or review of ongoing programs changes
